ダンゴウオ/ Japanese Lumpsuckers

Lethotremus awae, Known as lumpsuckers or by their cuter Japanese name Dango fish. Dango are a common Japanese dumpling snack of rice flower shaped into little balls and placed on a skewer with some kind of topping or flavoring mixed in. One Dango ball is similar in size to an adult Dango fish. Now, February through April, is the best season to see these cute fish and especially their newly hatched babies. 

ダンゴウオの英名はランプサッカーです。長崎で見たいなら2月から4月はベストです。特に今の時期は可愛いあかちゃが見られる。

The babies are born with a halo and as they grow older, usually within a month, they will have done enough bad things to lose their halo. ( ´∀｀ )　They start out at about  5 mm or less in size and will grow to about 2 cm. Above you can see a fairly newly hatched Dango fish greeting a Skeleton shrimp.

ダンゴウオの赤ちゃんが孵るときに赤ちゃんは頭にきれいな天使の輪があります。一ヶ月ぐらいで十分悪いことをしてて天使の輪がなくなる。( ´∀｀ )　孵るときに5ミリ以下だけど大人は2センチぐらいです。上の写真に最近孵ったダンゴウオはワレカラと挨拶している。

In Nagasaki they generally come in two colors red and green. The newly hatched babies will be a yellowish color.

長崎で見られるダンゴウオは2色あります、赤と緑です。孵ったばかりの赤ちゃんは黄色です。

I used to have to travel to Amakusa in Kumamoto or Omi island area in Yamaguchi to see Dango fish, but recently Mr. Sugisaki from the Smilers dive shop has found some here in Nagasaki prefecture. The best point here is a little tricky to dive because they current can get strong fast, but with Sugichan as your guide you'll be okay.

4-5年前は熊本の天草や山口の青海島までいかなければならなかったけど最近スマイラーズの杉崎さんは長崎県でいくつかのダンゴウオを見られるポイントを見つけてくれました。その中の一番いいポイントは潜りにくいときが多いだけどスギちゃんのガイドで安心で潜れるまた可愛いダンゴウオを見つけてけれます。
